Xabi Alonso is a famous young football coach widely recognized as one of the best at the job. The Spanish football manager was formerly an elite midfielder and is currently the head coach of Real Madrid. He led Bayer Leverkusen to an unbeaten 2023/24 Bundesliga title. A top deep-lying playmaker, or “orchestrator” in eFootball, he won the Champions League with Liverpool in 2005. He also won it with Real Madrid in 2014. Xabi Alonso has transitioned from a maestro on the pitch to a highly sought after strategist in both eFootball and real football.

Xabi Alonso, eFootball Manager

In eFootball, Alonso is a top-tier manager who specializes in Quick Counter formation with an 89 proficiency and out wide. He boosts player acceleration, finishing, and ball control. His playing style features an attacking midfielder-to-center-forward link-up play that excels in rapid central counterattacks. His link-up play style is a breakthrough pass A, which links a creative playmaker and attacking midfielder as the centerpiece and a goal-poaching center forward as the key man. Immediately the centerpiece has the ball in the attacking third, the center forward begins hunting for space behind the defence immediately.

Best Out Wide and Quick Counter Formations For Xabi Alonso

Xabi Alonso eFootball 4-2-1-3

A 4-3-3 variant, it feels like the ideal natural Xabi Alonso eFootball formation. The front three with wide instructions ensures the defense is stretched horizontally, giving the centerpiece more space to exploit centrally as a creative playmaker. Your key man, the center forward, is more than likely to be left unmarked with the wingers stretching the opposition defense, and can therefore make a well-timed run. Exploiting this gap quickly and clinically converting it into a goal does your team the justice it needs.

For the midfield double pivot, I recommend partnering an anchorman and a box-to-box kind of player. The best center back combinations are build-up and destroyer kind of players. For the fullbacks, I prefer using one defensive fullback and one attacking fullback for both defensive and attacking balance.

This is the quick counter’s most lethal formation when applied correctly. This formation makes good use of Alonso’s breakthrough pass A. The attacking midfielder plays behind two center forwards. The center forward partnership should include one goal poacher to act as the key man. The other can be any of your choosing, though I prefer a deep lying forward to assist with the build-up while pulling defenders out.

The midfield three can be tweaked to your liking to all play as defensive midfielders or two as center midfielders with one anchor man as the defensive midfielder. You could use another aggressive defensive midfielder, an orchestrator, a box-to-box player, or a hole player, depending on the players you have.

This formation needs two attacking full-backs if you need to stretch the opposition defense and create more space for the two strikers. In such a case, using the deep-laying instruction to one of your DMFs is recommended to ensure you retain the numbers to defend, just in case the attack breaks down.

Player Profiles

Centerpiece

Xabi Alonso’s link up break through pass A requires a creative playmaker attacking midfielder as the center piece. This player should be technically elite. You need someone who can receive the ball under pressure, control it, and release accurate, lethal through passes. Having a player with phenomenal passing and visionary passing spices up this dish more.

Key Man

The key man in Xabi Alonso’s setup is a goal-poaching center forward. A player with a striker’s instinct, coupled with high speed and acceleration stats, should do the trick here. Finishing and shooting stats should also be good enough. Any Mbappe card or  Epic El-Hadji Diouf is a great candidate for this role.
