Cruise expert Colleen McDaniel attributes the introduction of Antarctic travel to pioneering cruise lines such as Lindblad and National Geographic. More mainstream travelers are now drawn to luxury lines like Silversea and Ponant, which have recently raised the bar even further.

Concerns about the environment have been raised by the sharp rise in tourists. According to a 2022 study, cruise ship pollutants cause Antarctic snow to melt more quickly as a result of tourism. There are no hotels on the continent because the Antarctic Treaty forbids the construction of permanent tourist infrastructure. In an effort to reduce emissions, IAATO recently started monitoring cruise ship fuel usage and promoting the use of electric propulsion.
